Holy Child Parish Tijeras, New Mexico

Religious Education

Sacred HeartCatechism classes are offered on Tuesday evenings, at 6:15-7:30 p.m. from September through April for Kindergarten through 5th grade and Wednesday evenings 6:30-8:00 for 6th-8th grades. The curriculum used is Ignatius Press, Faith and Life Series. Sacramental classes for Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist are part of the 3rd grade curriculum and require at least one year of previous Religious Education. First Holy Communion is held on the first Sunday of May each year.

Confirmation classes are held on Wednesday evenings at 6:30-8:00 p.m. for 8th through 12th grades. This is a two year program. We use The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth published by Saint Mary's Press, Decision Point by Matthew Kelly, Chosen, and Theology of the Body published by Ascension Press. Confirmation is held every other year (even numbered years) at a time chosen by the Archbishop's office, usually in May or June during the Easter/Pentecost season.

Confirmation Preparation 2018
Registrations for the fall Confirmation Class are now being taken. All students entering 8 - 11 grades may register anytime this summer during Parish office hours. If students have not been attending regular Religious Ed classes, we will have two Pre-Confirmation sessions especially designed to catch them up and prepare them.

Confirmation preparation requires a commitment from both students and parents. The program lasts two years; Confirmation will take place in the spring of 2020. The students will be required to attend classes on Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:00 from September through April each year and complete a total of 40 discipleship hours of service to the Church during that time. They will also be required to attend the Confirmation retreats. The students must also be committed to attending Mass every Sunday.

Holy Child Confirmation Website
Go to Holy Child's Confirmation website to find helpful documents, links to articles, and general information to support your faith journey.

A Post-Confirmation Youth Group is also held on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m. for those high school students who have already been confirmed and desire to continue growing in the Faith. This group is less formal and is peer-led. The evening consists of a lesson, faith-sharing, and snacks. This group hopes to support one another in the faith and shared moral values while living in the world.

Well-trained, and for the most part, experienced catechists faithfully volunteer their time year after year to pass on a solid Catholic knowledge of the Faith. Their love and generosity, year after year, is itself a powerful testimony to the Way, the Truth, and the Life of Jesus Christ. By knowledge and example we hope to form a new generation of faithful Catholics.
